So anyway, I was there for him, all his friends were (after all, your girlfriend tricking you into getting her pregnant at eighteen is sort of a big deal.) It took a while but he accepted that he was responsible for the child even though he hadn’t consented to it. He confided to me, after a while, that he was even looking forward to it a bit: though he didn’t trust the mother anymore, he had always wanted to be a father someday, and it was nice to think he might get to be one (2/3)

Anyway, shortly after he had come around, he found that his girlfriend-without talking to him about it-got an abortion. When he asked her why, she blamed him, and what she called his ‘immature reaction’ to the pregnancy. The whole ordeal really shattered him, and as much as I loved him, I lost track of him when I went to college-he stopped talking to anyone. Whenever I hear about male privilege, I think of my sweet, shy friend, who had no say in either the conception or termination of his baby.
