socialjusticeally:

A lot of this “trans identity umbrella” relies on other cultures’ idea of what constitutes gender (like Hijra and Kathoey) that prescribe social role and status upon birth.

This isn’t the same as “trans” in the western world. Even if you experience “gender dysphoria”, transitioning is still a choice and it’s in no way comparable to a different culture’s interpretation of biological makeup. Those identities aren’t chosen.

Whereas in the western world, identity is something you take a more active role in, despite your birth condition. It’s completely perplexing to me that Tumblr’s more active trans community would try to justify their identities based on class systems from a culture they’ve never experienced and expect their creation of a radical “trans” identity and expect it to stick, when it doesn’t rely on any societal structure whatsoever.

That isn’t to say that it’s wrong. But the way it’s defended like it’s an absolute normal aspect of western society is completely in error.

i kind of tried to explain some of this to someone the other day, that transitioning over to the other gender is still a choice but they were adamant that it’s not a choice and “have i ever heard of gender  dysphoria”

yes i am aware that you may feel that way inside and can’t help that but it’s still your choice whether or not you change your gender identity.
